  • Useful

By Deer hunter with a pow (Pcmac user)

I find this app useful for writing stuff like backing tracks, and other stuff. I wish you could have other instruments/instrument effects, Like the piano and electric piano, so it’s be something like guitar, distortion guitar, chorus guitar, etc. I also wish that instead of hitting just chords, you could add individual notes to your song. So If I wanna transition between chords for instance , emadd9 and Cmaj7, in between those chords I could add a few individual notes, probably e-d-g-a-c. Also there’s a few scales not on here like melodic minor and it’s modes, and a few harmonic minor modes too. Last thing is that you probably wanna use more complex poly chords. Let’s say I have an am/d poly chord, (which is really an with a d note as the bass) I could use a chord instead of just the note d, so it could be am/dm7, or something like that. So basically what I’m getting at is that we should get the chance to combine 2 (or more) completely different chords
  • Really good app, minor issues

    By Giodude1982 (Pcmac user)

I really like the spirit of this app and its simplicity. Having the ability to sketch out chord progressions while standing on the subway is invaluable. A few things I would like to be improved. Having the ability to set how many times a section should repeat would make song building easier. Some scales are just incorrect, for example the C minor blues scale is spelled as C D# E# F# G A# rather than the more universally common C Eb F Gb G Bb. The difference is substantial: the second note in the scale is a minor third, not a sharp second; the last note a flat seven not a sharp sixth, etc. I believe most people think about the notes that way, unless I’ve been living under a rock. Similarly, certain chords are spelled with weird enharmonics, for example when in C major, the A7 (as secondary dominant) is spelled A Db E G, but we all know that the second note is a major third, i.e., a C, not a flat four (!). That’s just plain wrong.
  • Very Useful, Needs a Couple Important Changes

    By CoryPutnam (Pcmac user)

I’ve always loved using this app. I’m a student composer and it’s very valuable hearing different voicings of chords in quick succession and brainstorming new material when I can’t be around a piano or guitar. The issue is that the “Borrow” function for utilizing modal mixture only works for the parallel modes of any given scale, and as a composer, it’s frustrating not being able to write a key change or even utilize relative modes of my home scale without having to open a new document. It’s a lot less common for songwriters to borrow from scales in a parallel mode because that fundamentally suggests tonicization of a different key signature (e.g. Borrowing B Lydian chords in a piece with a scale of B Natural Minor would suggest relativity to F# Major rather than a direct relation to B minor.) It’s useful for finding interesting flavors, so I would like for it to remain there, but it would be so convenient to (1) Be able to access F# Phrygian chords when I’m in the parent key of D Major (2) Allow key changes mid document, which would probably alleviate the first problem as well in one swing. I’ve paid for the full version three different times and it is always worth it, just adding this fundamental compositional tool would be very useful, particularly for providing helpful compositional cues to novice songwriters. Looking forward to any further update! 🎶
  • Best chord assist on iOS.

    By MusixMonkey (Pcmac user)

I’ve tried them all. This is the best. Needs a latching option and a way to have chords hold for longer than a whole note in song mode... or better yet, a clock divider after Link in. Then you could set it to /4 or something for slower chord changes when driving an arp. Right now you have to bind song chords to midi notes and sequence the progression outside of app. But still, this is a very powerful tool. The best bonus feature? You can use it in that floating side window thing on an iPad!
